Gzip as an indicator of the Technical Internet Maturity Level?

Recently, I found out about http://www.whatsmyip.org/http-compression-test/, a web resource that tests if your web server uses gzip compression.

Being a curious person, I tested different sites, starting with the company I work at. Soon, I found some kind of trend…

Working at an Internet Bank myself, I tried the four big ones: Handelsbanken, Nordea, SEB and Swedbank. None of them used gzip to compress their sites.

Just to compare, I started testing some other companies with quite a big load and a similar branch structure – the four big newspapers (Aftonbladet, DN, Expressen, SvD). The result? All four used gzip.

Is this a coincidence – or is it possible to draw some kind of conclusion of this? I guess the sample is too small to be sure of anything, yet the ratio (0% vs. 100%) seem to be more than just mere chance.

Is it possibly a sign of the technical maturity levels of the two different trades?

Suggestions?
